Một số thành câu thành ngữ tiếng Việt dịch sang tiếng Anh

     Chắc hẳn bạn đã từng nghe những câu thành ngữ này rồi tuy nhiên bạn muốn sử dụng, nói bằng tiếng Anh thì lại gặp khó khăn bởi không thể dịch Word-by-word được? Bài này sẽ chỉ cho bạn nghĩa của một số thành ngữ tiếng Việt khi dịch sang tiếng Anh như thế nào?  

1. Tay làm hàm nhai, tay quai miệng trễ –> No bees, no honey, no work, no money.

2. Chậm mà chắc –> Slow but sure.

3. Cầu được ước thấy –> Talk of the devil and he is sure to appear.

4. Muộn còn hơn không –> Better late than never.

5. Câm như hến –> As dumb as an oyster.

6. Tắt đèn nhà ngói cũng như nhà tranh –> When candles are out, all cats are grey.

7. Thừa sống thiếu chết –> More dead than alive.

8. Ngủ say như chết –> Sleep like alog/ top.

9. Nhắm mắt làm ngơ –> To close one’s eyes to something.

Phân biệt Desert và Dessert

     Cùng học 2 từ vựng chỉ khác nhau một chứ s nhưng lại có nghĩa khác nhau hoàn toàn. Đó là Desert và Dessert nhé.! Vì chỉ khác chữ S cho nên có thể rất nhiều bạn nhầm lẫn 2 từ này và khi sử dụng trong câu, sẽ vô nghĩa bởi nghĩa của 2 từ này là hoàn toàn khác nhau. Cùng xem nhé!

 Desert –/ˈdezə(r)t/– (đọc là đe dớt  ): vừa là danh từ vừa là động từ

• + Nếu là danh từ thì mang nghĩa là sa mạc
• + Nếu là động từ thì nó có nghĩa là ruồng bỏ, bỏ rơi, rời khỏi

Eg:

• - When winter are coming, birds desert theirs nests to fly to the South. (Khi mùa đông đang đến gần, chim chóc sẽ rời tổ và bay về phương Nam)
• - Gemini felt that her luck had deserted her. (Gemini cảm thấy vận may đã rời bỏ mình rồi)
• - He deserted his wife so that he could marry a younger woman. (Ông ta bỏ vợ để lấy người khác trẻ đẹp hơn.)
• - The ship is sinking!! We have to desert it! (Thuyền đang chìm kìa! Bỏ nó lại thôi!)

Dessert –/dɪˈzɜː(r)t/– (đọc là đi dớt):

Là danh từ và mang nghĩa là bữa ăn tráng miệng (hoa quả hay đồ ngọt). Khi đi ăn ở nhà hàng nước ngoài người ta sẽ dùng từ: Dessert first và bạn sẽ ăn đồ ăn tráng miệng trước khi ăn bữa chính.

This word has 27 letters which appears in Love’s Labour’s Lost, Act V, Scene I, which means “invincible glorious” or “Honorableness.”

2. Antidisestablishmentarianism

This is the best known long word which has 28 letters. It means “opposition to the withdrawal of state support or recognition from an established church, esp. the Anglican Church in 19th-century England” as explained in Dictionary.com.  It has been quoted once by the British Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, 1809- 1898.

3. Floccinaucihihilipilification

This 30- letter-word is a non-scientific English word and it appears in the first edition of the Oxford English Dictionary. It is longer than antidisestablishmentarianism. The 1992 Guinness Book of World Records calls floccinaucinihilipilification “the longest real word in the Oxford English Dictionary,” whereas it calls pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis “the longest made-up word in the Oxford English Dictionary.” It means “act or habit to deny the value of some particular things” but some dictionaries translate it as “the act of considering something to be worthless.

4. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

This 34-letter word appears in the Oxford English Dictionary. It is a word specifically created for a song in a movie called “Mary Poppins” until its film version of the musical was popular enough that everyone got to know this word.

5. Hepaticocholecystostcholecystntenterostomy

This 39-letter long is the longest word found in Gould’s Medical Dictionary. It is a surgical terminology, which refers to surgical creation of a connection between the gall bladder and a hepatic duct and between the intestine and the gall bladder

6. Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis

This 45-letter long word is the longest word found in dictionaries. According to the eighth edition of Webster dictionary, it means, “pneumoconiosis disease caused by inhaling small particles of quartzite.” This is the scientific name for a coal miner’s disease, which is particularly caused by breathing in particles of siliceous volcanic dust. It is the lung disease that miners in Africa came down with from getting silicon silvers in their lungs.

This word has 50 letters.  There is a display of one French writer’s ancient story in a library shelf, with this long English word as its book title.

9. Aequeosalinocalcalinoceraceoa – luminosocupreovitriolie

This word is at 52 letters, describing the spa water at Bath, England. It was invented by the British Medical author, Dr. Edward Strother, 1675-1737

This word has 100 letters. It appeared in the book titled “Finnegan wake” written by Irish author, Andean James Joyce, 1882- 1942. This word refers to the downfall of Adam and Eve.
